Irish Christmas Candles

…and candles in general are used as a major component in an Irish Christmas.  They hearken back to stories of the flame of Brigid.  Nowadays, on Christmas eve, a candle can usually be found on the dinner table adorning three place settings, a pitcher of milk, a bowl of water and loaf of Irish Seed Cake.  The three place settings are in anticipation for the Holy Family to arrive. Additionally, it is customary to place a lighted candle (usually red) with a sprig of holly near the front window and may be accompanied by others (one for each family member who has died since last Christmas).  The large candle near the front window is lit on Christmas Eve as a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay on that first Christmas Eve.  To have no light meant that you shared the guilt of the Innkeeper at Bethlehem who said, “No Room”!  On the other hand, it’s said to be lucky to eat breakfast by candlelight on Christmas morning.

A ceremony for lighting the candle may also take place.  It is usually one in which prayers are said for the deceased.  The candle is usually lit by a daughter named Mary, or by the youngest member of the family and put out only by someone named Mary.

This candle was once used as a signal to any priest seeking refuge that he was welcome in the home and that it was safe to say Mass.  This reference goes back to when it was a crime in Ireland to be Catholic and to practice one’s faith, in public or private.
