Irish Christmas wreaths
… and the tradition of decorating doors during Christmas with wreaths made of holly branches can trace it’s roots directly to Irish immigrants from the South of Ireland who came during the Great Famine. Holly grows wild in Southern Ireland and is a beautiful plant that can be made into various shapes for decorating the house including wreaths.
On the days leading up to Christmas, Irish children survey the countryside for holly, ivy, bay and other evergreens for cutting and decorating the house with wreaths and greenery. Finding a holly bush loaded with berries is considered very lucky. Wreaths of holly, were also believed to have magical powers by the ancient inhabitants of Ireland since they remained green throughout the winter, and wreaths were often placed over the doors of homes, or strands of holly were worn in the hair to drive evil away. Another purpose was to freshen the air indoors and brighten the home during a long, winter.
As with all things Irish, there are many legends attached to holly and the wreath as well. It is said that holly sprang from the footsteps of Christ as he walked the earth, and the pointed holly leaves on the round wreath represent the crown of thorns Christ wore while on the cross. The red berries symbolize the blood he shed. With this in mind it is easy to see how the Irish adopted using this plant for Christmas creating wreaths. Another legend has it that on Christmas Eve, an angel stands on every spike of the holly plant’s leaves, and that if good people find shelter in the holly’s branches, that the evil spirits would be driven away on this Holy Night. So by placing a wreath made of Holly on the front door, travelers could find shelter “in the holly branches” per se.
